PLATINUM JUBILEE TIME CAPSULE BURIED AT HIORNE TOWER

At 12.00 noon on Saturday 31 December 2022, the Mayor of Arundel Tony Hunt, Deputy Mayor and Town Crier, Angela Standing gathered at Hiorne Tower with other Councillors, Council Officers and local residents to bury a Time Capsule commemorating events in Arundel in 2022.

After a Proclamation delivered by the Town Crier to mark the occasion, Tony Hunt said:

“Ladies and Gentlemen, young people of Arundel.

With just over twelve hours remaining, each of us will have our own personal memories of the year that ends today. But for all of us as a community this has been a memorable year.

We have planted the Covid memorial tree in an act of faith that the worst of the pandemic was over.

We saw the Ukraine flag flying in Arundel (and we collected a lot of money for the Red Cross in Ukraine).

We saw Olivia Colman filming in Arundel High Street.

We proved once again that Arundel is a town with a huge heart by collecting an enormous amount of donations for struggling families at Christmas.

But for many of us the most memorable events were associated with Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

We planted the tree in Jubilee Gardens in February to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Queen’s accession.

We celebrated the Platinum Jubilee in June, when the Duke of Norfolk lit Arundel’s beacon here at Hiorne Tower.

Together, we marked the Queen’s passing in September.

All of these events are recorded in this Time Capsule, in this year’s issues of The Bell magazine, in the writing and artwork of Arundel’s young people, in the photographs taken by Charlie Waring and Nigel Cull and many other items submitted.

So now by kind permission of His Grace The Duke of Norfolk we are burying our record of this year here in Arundel Park. It is to be opened in 70 years time. I am sending my apologies for absence from that event. But I hope that some of the young people here today and some of the young people who have contributed to the material that has gone into the Time Capsule will be here when it is opened.
