As the nights draw in, making yourself visible to drivers is one of the simplest ways to stay safe when walking, wheeling, cycling or riding.
Dark clothing absorbs light and can make it much harder for drivers to spot you, particularly on roads with little or no street lighting. Light-coloured and bright clothing helps, but reflective clothing and accessories are far more effective because they reflect vehicle headlights back towards the driver.
If you regularly travel after dark, consider carrying reflective items such as armbands, slap bands, reflective strips or a high-visibility vest. These take up very little space in a pocket or bag and can easily be worn over darker clothing when needed. Carrying a torch can also help you see where you’re going and make you more noticeable to others.
It’s also important not to assume a driver has seen you just because you can see their vehicle. Darkness, poor weather, glare from lights and other distractions can all affect what a driver is able to see. Always take extra care when crossing roads after dark and make eye contact with drivers where possible before stepping into the road.
A few simple steps before setting out can help drivers see you sooner, give everyone more time to react safely and reduce the risk of collisions during the darker months ahead.
Remember: Be bright, be reflective and be seen.
