River wall improvement works
Good progress continues to be made with the improvements to the wall at River Road. Last week, we explained that we are experiencing some difficulties and delay in the construction industry supply chain as a result of Covid-19. Although arriving a few days later than expected (from Luxembourg), a further 33 steel sheet piles were delivered to site this week. Piling activities will resume next week after the recent short pause.
Forecast for next week
Steel sheet piles will be loaded on to the jack up barge on Monday 4 May 2020 from River Road car park. The barge will then move downstream and set up for piling adjacent to Rats Castle. Vibration and hammer piling is expected to resume on Tuesday 5 May 2020 and throughout Wednesday 6 May. There will be no piling activity on Thursday 7 May 2020 (when the jack up barge will be moved to a new upstream position), Friday 8 May 2020 (Early May Bank Holiday), or on Saturday 9 May 2020.
It remains the case that our contractor will need to make adjustments to their programme of activities (sometimes at short notice) in order to ensure the works remain on schedule and are completed as efficiently as possible. Please be prepared for noisy periods throughout next week.
More steel sheet piles are expected to arrive on site between Monday 4 May 2020 and Wednesday 6 May2020, although these deliveries remain subject to change at short notice.
Embankment raising South of the A27 at Fitzalan Road
There will continue to be periodic deliveries of site equipment and materials to and from the site compound at the end of Fitzalan Road. You will continue to see operatives dig post holes (using a mechanical auger) and install the king piles (small concrete posts) as they make improvements to the crest of the river bank. We have agreed (with our contractor) that the newly constructed defence line will now extend around the inlet bank (at the Granary/Windmill) to meet with the main embankment line downstream of properties at Fitzalan Road.
There will be no construction works at this location on Friday 8 May 2020 (Early May Bank Holiday).
